Emmy Rossum and Lola Pettigrew are earning rave reviews for the twisty new serial killer drama Furious, now streaming on Hulu. It’s based on the 1987 Debra Winger/Theresa Russell movie Black Widow, but where that film was a stylish but fairly by-the-numbers neo-noir, the show adds depth and layers to both women at its core: Rossum is FBI Agent Alice Black and Pettigrew is foil and serial killer Catherine Grace — in this version, she’s sicker, more sly, and also more interesting, especially once her motivations are made known. Killing Eve (2018–2022)
Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer star as the two halves of one of television’s great cat-and-mouse narratives, with Oh as Eve Polastri, a bored MI5 analyst who becomes obsessed with hunting down the brutal, notorious assassin known only as Villanelle. It starts as a professional compulsion before it gets personal, and it soon becomes clear that the fascination goes both ways. This is a spy drama more than a crime thriller, but the complex relationship between two women on opposite sides of the law is similarly entrancing. Inspector Koo (2021)
The deeply messy (in all respects) Koo Kyung-yi (Lee Young-ae) is working as an insurance investigator after a career as a cop didn’t entirely pan out. She’s got a brilliant mind for patterns and games, though, and she finds herself drawn in when she starts looking more deeply into a series of seemingly accidental deaths. It seems a young college student known as K (Kim Hye-jun) is killing creeps, making the murders look like accidents, and arranging to make off with some of the insurance money — kicking off an increasingly dangerous game between two well-matched opponents. The Fall (2013–2016)
Jamie Dornan’s attractive young serial killer Paul Spector is, outwardly, a normal guy and a family man — no one you’d suspect of being a stalker and a serial killer of professional women in Belfast. Metro Police Superintendent Stella Gibson (the never-not-brilliant Gillian Anderson) is sent from London to help with a stalled investigation that leads her on a hunt for the clever Spector through physical dangers, psychological manipulation, and bureaucratic complications. These shows share Furious’s core appeal: sharp writing, morally complex women, and the slow-burn tension of a pursuit where the line between hunter and hunted keeps shifting. Any of them makes for an excellent next watch once you’ve finished Hulu’s breakout thriller.
